Linton School Bell

School Office.

Looking towards the school office, with the head masters office being the bay window. Behind the heads office was the film projector room.
We would have full size commercial film shows every week, showing on Friday and then repeated on Saturday nights. Films like The Dambusters, Colditz, and typical Ealing comedies, Doctor At Large, and such like, introducing us to such names as Leslie Phillips, James Robertson Justice, Richard Todd, John Mills, etc. It was during my last year at Linton, my job to operate the projector. On the left can be seen the little house that was the home of the school bell, no fancy electronic version here, it was a proper bell with a clanger and a rope. I was head Boy in my last year at Linton and so it befell me to ring the bell to advise of meal times, lesson changes, wake up time and such. I had to get out of my pit earlier than everyone else to perform this task. We had a code of bells according to the change they announced. Can’t remember what they are, but I do recall the emergency bell, which was seven strokes of seven. I took weekly turns at this task in turn with the Head Girl, who at this time was a very lovely Jennifer Westwood. The bell must have been a fixture provided later in the life of the school, as a simple hand bell was also used. The light colored building seen in the distance by the roadside was a new one to me; it was not there when I was at Linton. It is an addition to the class rooms.
