Linton Girls Ablutions

Outside Dorm one, with the girls ablutions in the distance.

This area, between dorm 1, on the right and dorm 2 left, with the girls ablution block in the middle, is where we had the bright idea of building a fish pond and rockery. We actually achieved a big hole, before somebody said, where are we going to get fish from, and will the water run away, and how do we keep the water clean, and, and, and.......So, the fish pond idea was quietly dropped, and the hole was left to fill itself in. At the far end of this dorm, behind the photographer, was a weather station. I took an interest in this, Meteology thing, and persuaded Mr. Robinson to advise how it should be operated. This was acted upon, and lessons given. I was promptly given the task of recording the temperature, measuring rainfall, identifying clouds, judging wind speed, and some other stuff.
I thought it interesting, all the data had to be duly recorded and official graphs and charts produced. It was then forwarded to the metrological office on a weekly basis for official recording; I don’t think I ever did that though. I was taught how to identify clouds; it was amazing what one could learn about weather, just by looking at clouds. The rain fall meter thingy, I am sure it had an official name, was a bit of all right kit, do you know, it never seemed to rain as much then, is it me, or as soon as I started to pay income tax, has it peed it down every day since?
Wind speed judgment was not an exact science. You had to look for bits of paper, leaves and assorted debris, that happened to be flying about and lifted off the ground by the wind, and how high, and how far it was blown, well that dictated the wind speeds, and of course direction, so if I would see a small farmstead fly past, at say 50ft altitude, with a little girl leaning out of the bedroom window, shouting "Toto, Toto, where are you", then I would, with some decree of certainty, record a wind speed at ''storm'' level, about a nine I think. I probably would not mention the house.
